Have a Terrible Guy Fawkes Day!

November 5, 2013 by capture-monger

So….if one really looks into the whole Guy Fawkes Day / Bonfire Night history, there are quite a few ins & outs that often go overlooked – and such will continue with this posting!  Well… alright will touch upon it briefly,  but mainly this is just supposed to be for fun and not a big debate.  Apparently King James was an anti-Catholicism d-bag, which served as the chief motivation for the group of conspirators headed by Guido / Guy Fawkes to blow […]

‘Reclaiming Community’ Talk from Schumacher Lectures.

November 5, 2013 by capture-monger

It’s been a long-while since last posting a Schumacher lecture, and with the recent experience at Quail Springs, it seems fitting to share another nugget of ‘Small is Beautiful’ gospel. As head founder of the Institute for Local Self Reliance, David Morris was invited to speak at the E.F. Schumacher Lectures.  Speaking of scale, Appropriate Technologies, and localization, Morris is knowledgeable and articulate.  The picture above is of a city in China whose pollution is the epitome of gloom, and […]

Cob Oven Creation.

November 4, 2013 by capture-monger

Yet another beautiful side project that we got to take part in at the highly secretive research compound in Southern Cal, was the sculpting of a Cob Oven.  The process is so extremely accessible, and the cooking potential is outstanding.  There were a few pizza parties had with these cob ovens, and, by-God, they were the best pizzas ever.  So whatchya waitin’ for?  Here’s a visual break down: I you have any questions or thoughts on cob ovens, I’d love […]

Textural Colors Still Life.

November 4, 2013 by capture-monger

One afternoon while passing through the kitchen, I happened upon a beautifully withered blue honeycomb candle, a shriveled red pepper, and a yellow bumpy gourd scattered on the table.  The combination of textures and colors really jumped out in the late afternoon sun, so I had me a little still-life shoot. Rocket Mass Heater Radness

November 4, 2013 by capture-monger

Deep in the arroyos (canyons) of southern California’s high desert, is an experimental research campus dedicated to developing harmonious lifestyles.  As winter approached, there was a need for a heater in the Commons/Kitchen Yurt – and bada-bing bada-vroom: a super-efficient Rocket Mass Heater was crafted!  Below you will find a rough time-lapse-esque sequence of the creation of the bench (thermal mass for the rocket stove) for the common space / kitchen at Q.S.  Please check out the Rocket Mass Heater […]

A+ Audio Treats fo FREE!

November 3, 2013 by capture-monger

Recently having stumbled across some excellent tunes of the swing and chilled-out hip-hop instrumental persuasions,  I thought it best to pass them along and spread the fun.  If you happen to be in a position to donate a dollar (or 5) to the outfits that produced these mixtapes, you will certainly get some great music karma.  Also, these releases have A LOT of tracks on them (40-50), and to be honest not all of them are ‘bangers’, so you (like […]

Ed Burtynsky’s Latest Visual Epic

November 1, 2013 by capture-monger

Hailing from Toronto, Edward Burtynsky stands out as one of the most environmental photographers of all time.  With his breakout study (and resulting film) ‘Manufactured Landscapes’, Burtynksy presented grand-scale visuals to help viewers question the morality of production cycles for consumer goods from China and other blighted landscapes caused by modern day lifestyles. Breaking a 7 year hiatus from the realm of film, Burtynksky and Jennifer Baichwal have teamed up once again to create yet another thought provoking documentary entitled […]

Banksy Wraps up his ‘Residency’ in New York.

November 1, 2013 by capture-monger

Banksy is a modern day prophet who’s work beckons the masses to think; and for that he will go down in the books as a legend.  After taking on the challenge of creating art on the Separation Wall in Israel’s West Bank, it seemed like Banksy couldn’t take on too much more ambitious of a project; but Banksy’s latest month long tour de force in New York has proved a rivaling feat.  Taking up an ‘Artist in Residence’ post for […]
